CAN

A month or so ago we became aware of a knocking in Jayne’s ID3 so took it to the Swindon VW dealership under warranty. They did whatever they do and reported that the near-side drop link needed replacing. We booked it in and the job was done. A few days later I was driving the car and noted that the knocking was still there so we booked it in again, for reasons I won’t get to, we booked it into the Gloucester VW dealership. Their man examined the car and said it was the off-side drop link and they didn’t understand why the Swindon dealership had not swapped both if both were at fault. Anyway, I booked the car in and yesterday it went in for repair. I collected the car and within 2 miles I turned around and went back rather cross that it was still knocking. Why hadn’t they heard it when doing the test run. Anyway, Ben the engineer came with me and before we’d got out of the dealership he heard the clank. Hmmm he said, not as it should be and very rarely there’s a fault with the thingummyjig so he took the car back into the workshop. He came back less than 5 minutes later saying he’d fixed it and he’d show me the fault. Well the bit of the story I haven’t told is that a couple of months ago we had a puncture in a tyre and they’re supposed to be self healing so no spare. Just in case, besides replacing 2 expensive tyres I got a repair kit containing a pump and a can of goo. I bet you’re ahead of me by now. Yes, the can was rolling about in the compartment under the boot and clanging on the car itself. The culprit was a rolling can of goo. How embarrassing. I now wonder whether both the drop links actually needed replacing, maybe not. I came back on the yet to be completed £750m new “missing link” road where the Air Balloon used to be, running silently without any clanking.
